What is plasma cutting?

Because plasma cutting combines cutting quality, productivity and versatility; it is today the most popular industrial cutting process.

Plasma is one of the four states of matter, next to solid, liquid and gas. The difference between these states lies in the energy level of matter.

Plasma systems use plasma current to transfer their energy to the workpiece (conductive). The formation of the plasma stream is created by forcing a certain gas, such as nitrogen, oxygen or argon, through a narrow nozzle. Then the external power source (Hypertherm) adds enough energy to the gas stream to ionize it. This creates the plasma arc with temperatures of up to 20,000°C. That plasma arc cuts through the workpiece by melting it and blowing away the molten metal.

The basic plasma cutting components are as follows:

  • Power supply: A constant current from a DC power source. The no-load voltage is between 230V and 400V (DC). The output power and kilowatts are determined by the source used, and that determines the speed and thickness of the system. The main function of the power supply is therefore to supply correct energy to maintain plasma arc after ionization.
  • Torch: The torch is the holder of the nozzle and provides cooling to the parts by means of air or water.
  • Arc starting circuit: A high frequency generator circuit is often used on liquid cooled torches of 130A and above. This generates an alternating voltage of 5,000 to 10,000V at approximately 2MHz. The voltage creates a high intensity arc in the torch to ionize the gas. This produces plasma. Air-cooled plasma torches typically use a moving electrode or blowback start technology to ionize the gas.
